Two models of AI support
The terms AI copilot and AI assistant are often used interchangeably, but they describe different models of how AI supports human work. Understanding the distinction helps businesses choose the right approach for different types of tasks and workflows.
An AI copilot works alongside a person in real time, suggesting, completing and enhancing as the person works. It is embedded in the tool the person is using and responds to their immediate context.
An AI assistant handles defined processes independently, executing workflows, preparing outputs and escalating for review. It operates in the background, handling work that does not require the person's real-time involvement.
What an AI copilot does
An AI copilot is designed for interactive, real-time support. It observes what the person is doing and provides contextually relevant assistance:
- Suggesting completions while writing
- Recommending next actions based on current context
- Surfacing relevant information as the person works
- Automating small, immediate tasks within a larger workflow
The copilot model works well for knowledge work where the person is actively engaged and benefits from real-time assistance. Writing, coding, analysis — activities where the person is producing something and the AI can enhance the production.
What an AI assistant does
An AI assistant is designed for process-level support. It handles defined workflows independently:
- Processing incoming items — emails, documents, requests
- Executing multi-step processes — qualification, enrichment, routing
- Preparing outputs for review — drafts, summaries, analyses
- Monitoring and alerting — tracking status, flagging exceptions
The assistant model works well for operational processes where the work can be defined, delegated and reviewed. Invoice processing, lead qualification, report generation — activities where the AI handles the process and the person handles the oversight.
How they complement each other
The most effective AI implementations often use both models:
- An AI assistant handles the process work — the defined workflows that run independently and produce outputs for review.
- An AI copilot supports the interactive work — the writing, analysis and decision-making that the person does in real time.
A salesperson might have an AI assistant that processes incoming leads, enriches them with research and prepares briefing documents — all running independently. They might also have an AI copilot that suggests responses while they are writing emails and surfaces relevant information during calls — providing real-time support.
The copilot and the assistant serve different moments in the work. Both are valuable. The key is using each where it fits.
